FAIR Advisor and HLS Alum Monica Harris (JD ‘91) Explains Why She Joined FAIR’s Team

FAIR Event- Oct 2022, Evanston IL

In an event held in October 2022 in Evanston, IL, FAIR Board of Advisor Member and Harvard Law School Alum Monica Harris (JD ‘91) describes why she joined FAIR’s team. It’s a powerful statement that reflects why we exist as an Harvard chapter. “The moment I clicked on the FAIR link and I read about the pro-human values, it was like I have been wandering in the desert alone and I have found my tribe.”

You can listen to and share Monica Harris’ “why” (1:23:30-1:27:44) and listen to Monica’s moving story that helped shape her views (1:38:47-1:56:22).

“For the past 11 or 12 years, maybe 15 years, I’ve felt like I’ve been living in a world that didn’t make sense to me, a world that I no longer recognized…”

“I went to law school with some of the brightest, most progressive-minded people you can imagine. I was on Law Review with President Barack Obama. Black or white. Red, Brown or Yellow, we all held to the same core standards. We were the guardians of truth. We were the defenders of the Constitution. That’s what we were charged with doing when we went out into the world to become presidents, members of the supreme court, heads of agencies. And I was proud to be a part of that. But 15 years later, 20 years later…I began to notice that some of the most progressive people…were slowly abandoning those principles…”

“It wasn’t just creative executives, it was the lawyers... Really smart people who…all of a sudden would only look at one side of an issue, who would squelch me if i decided … [to] offer a different way of looking at things…”

“After Barack was elected [2008]…I began to notice that the racial divide actually seemed to be widening and race relations seemed to be taking a step back, and I thought to myself, how can this be happening…what the heck is going on?…”

“We are living in a world of illusions. We are living in a world that makes us think we are much more different than we really are. It’s caused by the media…political opportunists…that world that is the illusion of division…is separating us…”

“The moment I clicked on the FAIR link and I read about the pro-human values, it was like I have been wandering in the desert alone and I have found my tribe.”
