No More 3-Hour Finals for Some Cambridge University Students

Cambridge University’s vice-chancellor announced that the notorious three-hour finals in some subjects would be eliminated. “The changes are expected to cut the gap in the number of first-class degrees achieved by women, ethnic-minority students and the disabled compared with others, and to reduce anxiety.”

During the pandemic, courses adjusted how they were delivered and assessed. Open-book examinations proved beneficial for some subjects — “mathematics and physics departments felt three-hour finals were necessary but some disciplines supported other assessments.”
