GW Law Alumni Call for Supreme Court Justice to be Fired

GW Law Alumni Open Letter

In an open letter, George Washington Law School alumni express their disdain for Supreme Court Justice Thomas’ “acts, omissions and opinions,” including “brazen political influence at the expense of sound legal reasoning” and ask GW Law to terminate Justice Thomas’ position as a GW Law professor. Those alumni who sign commit to withholding their financial contributions to GW Law until Justice Thomas is fired.

The letter accuses Thomas of having “misled the public about his wife’s and his role in the events of January 6, 2021” including failing “to recuse himself in cases addressing the insurrection.” And, then, “most recently, he joined the majority in an opinion that eviscerates reproductive rights in our country and authored a concurrence previewing his intention to strip Americans of the other fundamental rights granted to them by a long history of Supreme Court precedent…”

The alumni assert that “GW Law has an obligation to create an environment that nurtures students and offer a space in which all students can safely learn” and claim that “for GW Law to continue collaborating with someone whose words and actions subvert the legitimacy of the nation’s highest court, launch an assault on rights critical to student’s well-being, and undermine the legitimacy of the democracy of the United States as a whole is to violate the school’s own moral code…”

Terminating Justice Thomas’ position, they write, “would signal solidarity with those most affected by Justice Thomas’ recent actions and underscore GW Law’s express commitment to protect the legacy of every student, and its most vulnerable students, especially.”

The letter then states that the undersigned alumni will withhold financial contributions until Justice Thomas is fired.
