Jodi Shaw and the Racial Mask of Whiteness
In a 30-minute documentary and summary article, FAIR Advisor Eli Steele documents the journey of Jodi Shaw, a librarian at Smith College in Massachusetts, in standing up against racial discrimination.
After an incident on campus that did not involve Shaw, a project on which Shaw had been working was canceled due to the semblance of cultural appropriation. In other words, Shaw was swiftly implicated in the racial order as a symbol of the oppressor.
“If Jodi thought she could escape the toxic cloud of racial strife, she soon found out that she was wrong… The racial mask of whiteness was now imposed upon her.”
The cancelation was the beginning of Shaw’s journey to seek truth and stand up for values that oppose racial discrimination—values that undergird America’s hard-won civil rights.
