Proposed Mass. Bill Seeks to End Legacy and Donor Preferences in Higher Ed Admissions

The proposed bill would assess a fee to universities with admissions that consider legacy status, donor relationships, or have an early decision plan. The proposed bill comes ahead of the SCOTUS ruling on affirmative action. MA State Rep Montaño (bill co-sonsor) “said it would act as a ‘counterbalance’ ’for diversity if affirmative action is overturned, describing it as a ‘valiant effort to address inequities in our private institutions.’ Meanwhile, co-sponsor State Rep. Simon Cataldo said, “Legacy preference and donor relations preference have no place in an equitable or fair admission scheme.”
